Here was Holden the first day we put him in the bassinet.
Here he was on the last day. (He kept crossing his feet and bringing his legs up; he would not extend them to show how much he filled this little space.)
Toward the end of three months old, Holden was starting the night in the bassinet and ending the morning propped in the boppy pillow on our bed. That way I could get more than 2 hours of sleep. It seemed like he would go 24 hours not sleeping solidly and then go 24 hours of sleeping really well and then repeat the cycle. This wouldn't have been so bad if I could have just slept while he slept, but so not the case.
So...the night of June 5, 2012...his 3rd Month Birthday...we put him down in the crib for the first time! I thought I would be pretty sad about the big move, but honestly, I was just hoping for longer stretches of sleep.
Of course my body was now used to being up all the time, so even when he was asleep, I was struggling to sleep soundly. However, he didn't stay asleep and quiet as long as I was hoping he would! I kept finding myself in his room, comforting him. Having his older brother in the room next door to him prompted me to go into Holden's room quicker than I think I would have if Fletcher was guaranteed not to wake up.
The transition did not go too smoothly, but I had to keep at it. It's been a week now and I have to tell you...just when I thought I figured out when he'd be up, he would throw me for a loop. There were one or two early mornings where I took him back into our room and propped him in the boppy, but he hasn't been back in the bassinet. I have also put the boppy in the crib a couple nights. For naps, he's been napping on the go, in the swing (which has remained a lifesaver at different times), or in the crib. I've gotten better about forcing the naps to take place in the crib so the swing doesn't remain an option, because it just can't!
When he was struggling to sleep and waking up so much, my friend Dorothy's words kept entering my mind. She's big on milestones interrupting sleep patterns. At the same time I was moving him to the crib, I kept noticing during the day that he was getting closer and closer to turning over. Well...we'll save that big news for a different post!
For now, let's just say the bassinet still stands although I don't intend to use it. The swing is still up and running every now and then and I'm afraid to rule it out completely, the boppy is propped next to the crib in case I need to put it in there, and the baby is asleep in the crib as I type. Sweet Dreams!
