Grandfather Mountain and Sugar Mountain

Today was a busy day! We are staying on Sugar Mountain, which isn't too far from Grandfather Mountain, one of "North Carolina's top Scenic Attractions!" (That's what the sign says, right?)

Anyway, we got there early and went straight to the Mile High Swinging Bridge. We listened to the tour CD in the car on the way up. You can see that we were dressed for the hiking portion of our day and not so much the cold and windy visit to the swinging bridge!

Getting there early allowed us to share the bridge with only a handful of people. Here's the view from the bridge.

The Mile Marker is in the middle of the bridge.

After the bridge, we went to the Nature Museum and the Animal Habitats. We got to see the bears get fed. Holden was very excited to see them and kept making a GRRRR noise. We also got to see some eagles and otters before moving on.

We had a picnic lunch and walked a few trails. I can't remember all of them, but they are the easy ones. Grandfather Mountain is full of difficult trails that we wouldn't attempt with the kids, so we chose the super simple ones!

When the clouds moved away, we drove back up toward the bridge to try and get a picture of it from afar.

We wound up with two very tired munchkins on our way back to the hotel.

After naps, we rode the ski lift to the top of Sugar Mountain. Again, we were the only ones out. It was sort of raining, more so at the top. We only had a short time to walk around at the top before the lift would stop running. But we managed to hike up to the tippy top. We had to carry Holden and lift and move Fletcher through most of the trail to make it, but we did it.

This structure helped create more building codes for the future. It's definitely an eyesore.

Then we headed back down the mountain for dinner! It was a wonderful day and I'm glad we came here to see this part of the state!
