All About Asheville

Well, we have lived here almost 6 full years and haven't gone to Asheville...until now! We finally drove over to Asheville for a couple days. We had a day to drive there, a day to drive back, a day for The Biltmore Estate, a day for Chimney Rock State Park, and a free day for whatever tickled our fancy. Since we attached the trip to a weekend and Independence Day, Jesse only had to take two days off!

This post will cover three of the five days mentioned.

On our way to Asheville, we stopped in Charlotte to spend a couple hours with Jesse's cousin, Stephanie, her husband Jake, and their son, Zac. This is the same cousin's house that we have Thanksgiving at each year. Unfortunately, Jesse tends to miss that gathering, so it's been quite awhile since he's seen them. We ordered take-out and visited for awhile. Fletcher played with their dog and had a great time until he was completely worn out. Holden was just his adorable little self that nobody could get enough of. I had to get his picture with them, but realize now that I didn't get one of Zac!

After lunch, we continued on our trip. I had told Jesse how great Fletcher was in the car on the way to and from the beach, except for 45 minutes on one occasion, and he was getting to see it and hear it for himself. He was so incredibly quiet! And he wasn't even falling asleep, which was strange because that seemed to be what he wanted to do at Steph's house.

Once we got Asheville and checked in, we were already behind our normal schedule, so we opted for dinner in the restaurant attached to the hotel and had amazing meals preceded by our first beer tasting of the weekend in one of America's Beer Cities. We were all sweating and tired by the end because the A/C was broken in the main areas of the hotel that night and it was record breaking temps outside. Not. comfy. at. all. So, off to do the bath and bed routine we went.

While we were doing story time, we both noticed how hot Fletcher felt. We decided to just send him to bed, hoping that whatever might be coming on would be better by morning after a good night's sleep. (This coming from the mother that has always packed the thermometer and a variety of medications...just in case. And this time, I had zilch!)

In the middle of the night, our little guy woke up and Jesse went in to his room to console him and came back telling me how he was burning up. So, Jesse went out and bought some meds and came back and got a dose into Fletcher. In the morning, he took Fletcher to the local ER because he was still so hot and we had just started our trip and were worried of a possible ear infection or strep throat or some unknown. I stayed back with Holden.

They did a series of different things with him, but in the end, ruled it some sort of virus and cautioned us about spending any time outside because of the extreme heat. So, after they got home, we went out to brunch and then spent the remainder of the entire day in our hotel room. I later went out and got us take out from Olive or Twist for dinner. So, that was our free day. We were just hoping that he would be good to go the following day for the Biltmore, which we had purchased advance entrance tickets for.

I'm skipping the next two days because I'll do them in separate posts.

The final night, we loaded up the kiddos and walked to Lexington Avenue Brewery where we enjoyed a busy scene, live music, a flight of beer, a couple pints, and tons of outstanding food.

The following morning, we loaded up the car, checked out and headed home. This trip, Holden cried the ENTIRE way home. Over four hours of crying except for the 20 minutes he fell asleep and during the two stops we made just to make sure he was okay or see if he needed to nurse. UGH! This kid is killing us in the car seat! We didn't stay up to see any of the neighborhood fireworks, but we did hear them as we were lying in bed. Overall, we are glad we made the trip over to Asheville...FINALLY!
